Jan Vertonghen to Arsenal or Tottenham ?

Now that Arsenal have already secured the German international Lukas Podolski, every pundit around was absolutely certain that Wenger’s next target would be Jan Vertonghen, who could be available for as little as £7million as he approaches the last year of his contract at Ajax.

Vertonghen played alongside Thomas Vermaelen at the Dutch giants, and also in the Belgium national team, and after visiting the Emirates as a guest of Vermaelen he has made it clear that his first choice of new club is Arsenal.

But today the Mail has revealed that Tottenham are the first club to be given permission to speak to the versatile defender, and Harry Redknapp wants to secure his services as quickly as possible.

“Jan has some dream clubs, which are special for him,” said Vertonghen’s agent Mustapha Nakhli yesterday. “Playing football in the top of the Premier League is something he has always hoped for.”

The big problem with both clubs now is that neither can be absolutely certain of being in the Champions League next season and Vertonghen may prefer to delay a decision until the outcome of the last few games of the season is known.

And even then whoever finishes in Fourth may have to wait until Chelsea play in the Champions League Final on May 19th to learn their fate for next season.
